Dear Lyfteenites,
So you heard something about yourself and thought, “Wait, when did I do that?”
Perhaps someone has twisted something you say. So one friend got mad and told everyone their side of the story. Somebody put something on the Internet about you. Or maybe a student just fabricated a narrative and somehow people believed it.
One of the hardest parts is seeing the people who know you start to see you differently. You want to explain yourself to everyone. You want screenshots, witnesses, documentation, anything to prove you are innocent. And when someone replies, “Just ignore it," you ask, "How are you supposed to overlook something that is damaging your friendships or reputation?"
Lyfteenite, stand up for yourself when it matters, especially when the lie can seriously impact your safety, education, job, or reputation. If the circumstance calls for it, tell a parent, teacher, school official, or any adult you trust. But you don’t have to chase after every person to believe something about you.
I once saw a friendship destroyed by a misunderstanding. The first person told the story, and of course everyone heard that version. The other individual kept trying to justify herself. She would send long messages, call people, show screenshots, and keep asking, “Do you believe me now?”
At last she realized something that hurt. Some folks weren't interested in the truth. They already knew which story was their favorite.
That's when it gets tiring to have to explain yourself.
David knew what it was like to be wrongfully accused. Psalm 37:5,6 tells us to commit our way to God and trust also in Him; and He shall bring forth our righteousness as the light and our judgment as the noonday.
That doesn’t mean you sit there while somebody is destroying your life. It implies you don’t allow someone else’s lie to change you into someone you don’t know.
Don't fabricate a lie to counter theirs.
Avoid spreading any more rumors.
You know their secrets; therefore, don't share them.
Don't let unfair treatment turn you into a harsh person.
When it matters, tell the truth. Save any proof you may require. Calmly correct false information. Then carry on leading a life consistent with the reality you are defending.
Indeed, some people might never offer an apology. Months later, some may come to the realization and remain silent.
Some people might keep believing the false narrative. That is painful. However, your life cannot turn into a courthouse where you have to spend every day convincing people who have already made their decision that you are innocent.
When the gossip stops, allow your character to continue talking. The elements of the story that no one else saw are known only to God.
And sometimes, Lyfteenite, just knowing that must be sufficient to keep you moving on.
